CHAPTER 23

LOURDES

When my eyes met Dom’s, I could see all the questions that were sitting on the tip of his tongue, but instead of saying a word, he turned and walked out the door. He just walked out like nothing about us mattered at all. My heart was beating a mile a minute, and I felt as if I would pass out. How on earth did I end up here?

“Dometrius, please don’t go. At least let me explain first.”

I was behind him as he left my apartment, but he never stopped moving. Instead, he spoke with his back to me as he headed to the elevator, throwing his hand up as if he were dismissing me.

“You don’t have to explain shit to me, Lourdes. Go deal with that muthafucker. Rica needs me right now, and I don’t have time for this shit.”

That simple gesture hurt more than anything because it was like he didn’t even care enough to face me.

The second his finger hit the button for the elevator, the doors opened, and he was gone. I didn’t move, there was no point, so I dropped my head and went back to my apartment to deal with my skeletons.

“Never thought I’d see the day when you would be chasing after a man, Lourdes. You damn sure didn’t even give me a second thought. You just let go without a fight. That shit doesn’t feel good, does it?” Nas had a smug grin on his face when I entered my apartment.

“Chasing a man, yes. I’ll admit to that, but a little boy, no. You’re not a man. Clearly, we both know why,” I snapped back at him.

He simply looked at me and laughed like I had just said the funniest thing in the world.

“King Lion? That’s who that was, right? You’ve done well for yourself.” Nas looked around my place before he lifted one of the throw pillows from the sofa next to where he stood and then tossed it back. “Well, with him anyway. I would never have you living like this.”

“No, you would just foot the bill for an expensive ass place to enhance the bullshit ass fairytale that you wanted me to feed into. Don’t worry about Dom, he doesn’t need to throw money at me to show me that he cares.”

“He cares?” Nas chuckled and then glanced at the door, which was still open. “Don’t seem like it, Lourd. That nigga walked out on you, but, I mean, you did hide our daughter from him, so I guess that makes sense.”

He was right, and it hurt, but I couldn’t blame Dom. How else was he supposed to react to the fact that I had a kid that he didn’t know about? Even if she wasn’t really mine anymore. I carried her for six and a half months, delivered her early because I was so stressed, and then gave her to a family who could love her the way I knew that I couldn’t. That was so long ago that it didn’t even feel like it actually happened.
